Email list hygiene has many different names and is offered in countless other formats. It’s been called “Spam Trap Removal Service” or “Spam Trap Cleaning Service” to “Data Cleansing” or even “Email Cleansing” and it can be very confusing when making the right decision for your company as to what service provider to use. We prefer “email list hygiene”.

There are two types of hygiene providers. Threat removal and email verification. There is a big difference between a threat removal company and an email verification company.

Email Threat Removal

A threat removal company focuses their attention on threats that could harm your deliverability because of email spam traps, litigators (people who sue email marketers), protestors (people who contact spam fighters, ISP’s or ESP’s) and some types of bounces.

Threat removal companies do not remove spam traps altogether, rather they focus their time on spam fighters and the networks they use to bait spammers. This includes collections of email addresses (email spam traps), IPs, keywords, names, strings and other common denominators.

Litigators are finding it a lucrative business to sue email marketers without proper opt-in information. Threat removal companies monitor litigators worldwide and add their bait to the cleansing process.

Unsubscribers can lead to protesting. Protestors can lead to a spam trap. Threat removal companies have large static lists of people who truly are not interested in receiving any solicitation of any kind.

Bounces are not just detrimental to reputation scores but can also be email spam traps. Threat removal companies focus on bounced emails that are turned on and off at different time intervals. Top level domain email providers often activate expired accounts in order to capture and filter spam, which are traps.

Email Verification

Email verification companies are not known to be a spam trap removal service or a threat removal service. Email verification focuses on the email itself and reports back what that email is whether it’s a true deliverable email, soft bounce or a hard bounce.

Email verification companies are perfect for email marketers who want to get rid of bounces only. Any list that is over 10,000, if not monitored correctly, can ruin their reputation with ESP’s. ESP’s have certain thresholds of bounces (0.1% – 10%) and if you hit their threat level, will possibly suspend your account.
